How to Prepare for Breast Augmentation Surgery

An upcoming surgery can make many people nervous. Making sure you are properly prepared can help to ensure things go a little smoother. Below is a checklist that you can use to prepare for your breast augmentation surgery. Don't wait until the last minute. Being prepared can help calm the nerves.


According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, roughly nine million surgeries were performed to change a person's appearance through plastic surgery in 2003. According to the same statistics from the ASPS the liposuction procedure was in the top five plastic surgeries chosen by consumers in 2005.

Three or more days before Your Surgery

  • Have all necessary tests completed.
  • Talk with the doctor about any concerns or questions about their surgery. The more comfortable patients are before they go in for surgery, the more successful the outcome.
  • Make a list of all medicines routinely or frequently taken, including current prescription and over-the-counter medications. Write down the name of the drug, the dosage and frequency taken.
  • Arrange for the care of dependents.
  • Arrange for a ride home after surgery, .
  • Arrange to have a family member or friend fill any post-operative prescriptions.

The Day Before Your Surgery

  • Patients who will be under general anesthesia, should not eat any solid foods after midnight on the evening prior to surgery.
  • Confirm arrangements for a ride home from the hospital.
  • Patients should notify their doctor right away if they develop a cold, sore throat, or any other health problems. The surgeon may postpone the surgery.

The Day of Your Surgery

  • Dietary Guidelines: Unless instructed otherwise by a physician, patients may eat solid foods up until midnight on the evening prior to surgery. Do not drink coffee on the morning of surgery.
  • Clothing and Make-up: Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing to be more comfortable when returning home after surgery. Do not wear face make-up if having facial surgery, or nail polish if having hand or foot surgery.
  • Medication Guidelines: Unless otherwise directed, patients should take their usual medications the day of surgery, with the following exceptions: Do not take any diuretics or diabetic medication.
  • Tobacco: Do not smoke or chew tobacco the day of surgery.
  • Items to bring: Insurance card, a complete list of medications currently being taken, eyeglasses case, contact lens case, non-slip slippers, robe, hearing aids and dentures.
  • Items NOT to bring: Money, jewelry, watches or other valuables.
  • Arrive on time at the specified location.
